When we built the core infrastructure for Cocatips - Live Football Scores & Predictions, we had to design a backend capable of processing updates for approximately 80,000 football clubs without missing a single event.

In this article, I want to break down how we use Node.js background workers, PM2 process management, and Redis caching to power our highly available data API (
datav1.cocascore.com
).

The Scale of the Data

Football isn't just about the final whistle. Modern fans and analysts look for deep, granular data. A single match generates hundreds of data points, including:

Live match events (goals, cards, substitutions).

Deep head to head (H2H) & stats for historical context.

Stats, standings & form tracking across thousands of micro-leagues.

When you multiply this by 80,000 teams playing across different time zones, traditional database querying quickly becomes a bottleneck.

Caching Strategy with Redis

To ensure our frontend remains blazing fast, we heavily rely on Redis.

Whenever a user searches for an upcoming fixture to find an expert correct score prediction, we don't hit our primary database. Instead, our Node.js workers, running efficiently under PM2, constantly pre-calculate and sync these datasets into Redis memory.

This autocomplete and search functionality instantly pulls from Redis, guaranteeing sub-millisecond response times even when filtering through massive arrays of team and league objects.

Powering Mathematical AI Models

Beyond just displaying scores, our background workers are responsible for running statistical models. We process raw match odds and historical data to generate daily mathematical predictions.

By isolating these heavy computational tasks into specific PM2 worker instances, our main API remains entirely unblocked. This architecture allows us to reliably output complex data points daily, such as:

1x2 prediction today probabilities.

BTTS / GG predictions (Both Teams To Score).

Over 2.5 goals predictions.

Handling SEO and Indexing at Scale

With so much data, indexing is critical. We generate specific route rules and dynamic sitemaps to ensure search engines can properly crawl deep links, such as our Live English Premier League standings, table & results. We closely monitor traffic anomalies and manage our
robots.txt
configurations to ensure our infrastructure bandwidth is spent serving actual users, not just bots.

If you are building data-heavy applications, moving your processing to background workers and utilizing aggressive Redis caching is the way to go.
